Sail Training Ship (STS)
GSL takes pride in building the first ever Sail Training Ship “INS Tarangini” for the Indian Navy for training cadets. This Ship is built for worldwide operations to the design of Colin Mudie, UK and was commissioned on 11th Nov.1997. After satisfactory performance of “INS Tarangini”, GSL secured a repeat order for second Sail Training Ship “INS Sudarshini” which was successfully built and was commissioned on 27 Jan. 2012.
he ship is a steel hulled, round bilged, three masted sailing ship, square rigged on the forward and main mast and fore and aft rigged on the mizzen mast and has eighteen sails with a sail area of approx. 1035 sq. m.It has a/so got a very high endurance and can be deployed at sea continuously for a period of twenty days. The ship will have an accommodation for 61 persons and will be used under sailor under power and under combination of both.
Sail training ships are increasingly being used as basic seamanship and character building platforms by Navies the world over.
